Intermediate - Remutaka Cycle Trail
Featherston to Ocean Beach – 45km 3-4 hours
There is an easy off road trail from Featherson to Cross Creek along Western Lake Road but beyond here riders need to be intermediate to ride on the road to the coast. Keep left and use the recommended sections of off road trail; they add to the experience with native bush and wetland environments. If there are any cows or sheep on the road, just stop! The farmer will help you through.
Maymorn to Cross Creek – 25km 3-4 hours
The trail winds its way constantly but gently up into the Remutaka Range. High enough for the Summit to be in snow in winter. The height gives you great views across the Wairarapa valley and there is one mountain stream to cross. Along the way a series of train tunnels built in 1878 make for excellent photo opportunities. There are some short bending tunnels but the longest at the Summit is 584m long. The Fell engine which ran this line was considered an engineering marvel at the time.
Definitely take a good torch each. Some short sharp rises but generally a gentle climb expected of an old steam train route. The descent from the Summit to Cross Creek can be quick; but that’s what brakes are for. The final 500m is single track and can be ridden slowly for comfort. Definitely take a good torch each.
Add on a visit to the Fell Engine Museum in Featherston.
Catch the train from Wellington to Maymorn which connects with the Remutaka Rail Trail through Tunnel Gully.
Add on the Intermediate ride from Cross Creek to Ocean Beach to make this a two day ride.
Cross Creek to Ocean Beach – 36km 2-3 hours
This section of the trail is on the quiet Western Lake Road beside Lake Wairarapa, through rural landscapes to Cape Palliser on the south coast. Keep left and use the recommended sections of off road trail; they add to the experience with native bush and wetland environments. If there are any cows or sheep on the road, just stop! The farmer will help you through.
Add on the sections from Maymorn or Featherston to Cross Creek to make this a two day ride.
