Two Day Rides - Remutaka Cycle Trail

While these are two day rides you should also have a look at some options of adding a day out of the saddle to take in a bit more of what the Wairarapa has to offer.

River Valley to Rural Wairarapa via Historic Railway Tunnels

Petone to Maymorn – 35km 3-5 hours - Easy

An off road cycle path from Petone foreshore along the Hutt Valley beside the Hutt River. Plenty of picnic spots and swimming holes.

Book accommodation in the Maymorn area.

Maymorn to Cross Creek - 25km 3-4 hours - Intermediate

TEMPORARY DIVERSION IN PLACE - DOWNLOADABLE MAP

The trail winds its way constantly but gently up into the Remutaka Range. High enough for the Summit to be in snow in winter. The height gives you great views across the Wairarapa valley and there is one mountain stream to cross. Along the way a series of train tunnels built in 1878 make for excellent photo opportunities. Some short bending tunnels and the longest at the Summit is 584m long. The Fell engine which ran this line was considered an engineering marvel at the time. Definitely take a good torch each.

Shuttles to accommodation, towns and train services are available from Cross Creek with Martinborough Shuttles or Rimutaka Shuttles

Add on a visit to the Fell Engine Museum in Featherston

Rural Wairarapa and the Rugged South Coast

Featherston to Ocean Beach – 45km 3-4 hours - Intermediate

An off road trail along Western Lake Road from Featherson through rural landscapes to Lake Wairarapa and the ruins of the historic railway settlement at Cross Creek. The ruins include old work and turntable pits, chimneys and foundations. The Fell Engine which worked the route to Wellington was considered an engineering marvel at the time. The section from Featherston to Cross Creek is Easy but riders need to be intermediate to continue on Western Lake Road to the coast. Keep left and use the recommended sections of off road trail; they add to the experience with native bush and wetland environments. If there are any cows or sheep on the road, just stop! The farmer will help you through.

There is accommodation close to Ocean Beach.

Ocean Beach to Orongorongo – 18km 3-5 hours - Advanced

This is a rugged coastal trail back to Wellington and needs to be taken seriously with good preparation. Crossing mountain streams and riding through the tonnes of rubble brought down by them does require at least an intermediate skill level. There is nothing between here and Antarctica and the ocean and weather can be extreme. The earthquake scarring is worth taking some time to look at where the earth has lifted up to eight meters in places.

Shuttles to Wellington are available from Orongorongo.
